September 2021 Artist of the Month
Each month in 2021 – The Year of the Artist, a different arts category will be highlighted with an artist in that field being celebrated as the Artist of the Month.
The Arts Council is excited to highlight the career of Stephanie Reyes for the month of October 2021.
Stephanie Reyes is a ceramic artist living and working in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She received her BA from New Mexico State University. Reyes draws inspiration from her love of horror films and her own experiences of domesticity, being both a mother and a wife. At first glance, Reyes’ work appears delectable with its home décor color pallet and Pinterest-friendly forms, but upon closer examination, we find that something is not quite right. Her work distills the psychology of wearing a smile over intense emotions of unspoken truths. Festering and infecting the pleasure intended when sharing the tray of grandma’s cupcakes and cookies. She and her husband run a successful family business and collaborate on sculpture and painting. She values working at her home studio and being able to dedicate time to her daughter.
Her work has been exhibited locally, including the Las Cruces Museum of Art, Four Points Perspective Gallery, Seedboat Gallery in Silver City, and several Las Cruces Contemporary Art Pop Up Shows.
Reyes has also been juried and participated in shows outside of Las Cruces. In 2019 her work was featured in the Creep Show, Clay Center of New Orleans, Clay & Glass REDUX, Healdsburg Center for the Arts, Healdsburg, CA, Visions in Clay, LH Horton Jr Gallery, Stockton, CA,
Clay3 (Clay Cubed) National Juried Ceramics Exhibition, and Clay Space Ceramic Arts Center, Lisle, IL. In 2020 her work was included in
With Bated Breath, Gallery 114, Portland, OR and the 23rd San Angelo National Ceramic Competition, San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, San Angelo, TX.
