The week of July 11 – 16, 2022, Doña Ana Arts Council hosted the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) production of The Frog Prince. For more than 40 years, MCT, the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, has been on the road visiting nearly 1,200 communities a year. The cost per student is $70, and there are partial scholarships. Families with multiple children registered will receive a 50% discount.
The tour directors will arrive at Alma d’arte Charter High School with a set, costumes, props, and everything it takes to put on a play except the cast. The Arts Council will register all cast members in advance, and the tour directors will audition students for the roles in the production on the first day of the camp. The cast rehearsed throughout the week in preparation for the two public performances on Saturday, July 16th.
Erik Heuchert, a graduate of the University of Montana and currently teaching choir, music, and drama, will be one of the directors. The other director, Mark Sheme, is a graduate of Valdosta State University and is headed to The University of Pennsylvania to start his master’s degree in the fall.
The Missoula Children’s Theatre is based in Missoula, Montana, and also runs many local programs. These include musical theatre day camps and performing arts classes for local children, a summer residency Performing Arts Camp for students from around the world and the Missoula Community Theatre which creates an arena for local talent of all ages to participate in large-scale productions and attracts audiences from western Montana. For students interested in a career in the performing
arts, MCT has developed Next Step Prep—The Academy for Musical Theatre—providing high school students an affordable opportunity to train and study with well-known professionals in the field of music, dance and acting to prepare for college. For information, email nextstep@MCTinc.or
