Classical Drinking: La Catrina String Quartet with special guest Jim Shearer aim to “de-mystify” classical music by performing audience-friendly selections in a relaxed environment. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the door or in advance on-line. A cash bar will be offered by Dry Point Distillers with yummy cocktails and non-alcoholic options. Audience members are encouraged to ask questions and interact with the musicians throughout the evening.
This is the first of six Classical Drinking music events that will take place on the Second Saturday of the month from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. Classical Drinking will follow the Second Saturday 10-10 Arts Hop gallery opening from 4-7 p.m. at the DAAC Arts & Cultural Center.
La Catrina String Quartet was founded in 2007 and is based at New Mexico State University (NMSU). Quartet members are from Mexico (Daniel Vega-Albela, Jorge Martínez-Ríos), Venezuela (Simón Gollo) and Chile (Jorge Espinoza). They are internationally recognized for their contemporary Latin American repertoire. The quartet will be joined by special guest Jim Shearer, artistic director of the Classical Drinking series, who plays the tuba professionally and is a professor of music at New Mexico State University
The full 2019-2020 series schedule is as follows: September 14, October 12, November 9, February 8, March 4 and April 11. Performers will include Dena Kay Jones on solo piano, Erik Unsworth on double bass, Sarah Daughtrey on vocals and Celeste Shearer on French horn.
