My exploration of wax as an art medium has been a happy progression from candles, batik on cloth, batik on paper, and most recently the incredible process called Encaustic: painting with hot wax & resin with colored pigments. I was introduced to Encaustic Art at a LCAA workshop with Georjeanna Feltha and have since become a member of the Encaustic Institute.
We will work on a piece of wood or paper and apply the encaustic medium with a brush to the wood in layers. You will fuse the layers with a butane torch or heat gun in between layers. (Both tools produce unexpected and mesmerizing results!) We will experiment with color and design as we mix the wax paint. In addition, we will be using carving tools to create textures with incising and etching. Encaustic lends itself very well to mixed media, so you may bring some paper images or words to imbed within the wax. All supplies are included. So bring an apron and your curiosity. Remember, one of the most important skills of an artist is a willingness to experiment.
